This chapter examines how political parties and the military have channeled aspirations for a political career. It describes how political parties have afforded aspirants with opportunities to groom their potential for public office and how the military, upon directly intervening in politics, conducts its own process of recruitment that often results in the civilianization of the regime and a revival of political parties.
