The story of human civilization is virtually inseparable from the enduring aspect of human behaviour marked by the movement and settlement of people across geographies: migration. Migration, originally a biological term to describe animal movement, has been for long, central to human history. As Valsiner (2022) noted, “Historically speaking—we as the species of Homo sapiens are all migrants—only at differing times and circumstances” (p. 1). The earliest instances of migration can be traced back to the Rift Valley in Africa, from where the Homo erectus and Homo sapiens migrated and spread to Europe and beyond (Koser, 2007). Ancient civilizations like the Greek, Roman, Mesopotamian and Indus Valley were also shaped by migratory flows (Koser, 2007).
