The behaviour of building greatly depends on shape, size and geometry of column. The strong column weak beam concept has generalized the fundamental for its importance. The performance of building in terms of spectral displacement and acceleration has been found out with different column shapes of square and rectangular for a particular G+6 building of specific plan using the design software SAP2000. A square shape plan with equal room sizes has been taken to avoid any eccentric forces so as to avoid torsional forces in the building. The square shape column shows better performance as compared to rectangular section. The building with rectangular column shows an increase in displacement and spectral acceleration of ~ 122% and 100% as compared to square shape column building. The areas of the cross-section of the rectangular and square column are maintained same to consume equal quantity of materials. The performance of the building was found by using pushover analysis available in the software SAP 2000.

摘要
