Building Information Modeling (BIM) has a profound impact on the future of the construction industry. However, the current BIM education in many universities worldwide fails to meet the industry’s demand for BIM talent. The awareness and acceptance of BIM among university students have not been effectively studied. This research constructs a model of the driving factors for Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) students’ focus on BIM applications based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). It explores the different impacts of BIM competition experience on AEC students’ acceptance of BIM positions. The results indicate that students with competition experience score higher in perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, and attitude. Competition experience can positively influence students’ choice of BIM positions. Therefore, it is recommended that universities and enterprises enhance students’ BIM technical application abilities and career orientation through academic competitions and practical cooperation, thereby promoting the development of the BIM industry.
