Shu - 蜀 Brocade: Satin Was Originally Produced in Shu and Imported from Shu to Jiangnan - 江南 During the Period of the Six Dynasties
摘要
China’s old industries made great achievements in Sichuan, notably salt wells (wells dug for extracting salty groundwater for salt production, that is, salt mines) and Shu brocade, all of which used the most complex devices, such as ze qiao 笮桥 (bamboo cable suspension bridge), zhan dao 栈道 (a road built along a cliff), to accomplish these relatively arduous projects. I wrote the article “Culture of Ancient Sichuan” before, which was published in the first issue of History Quarterly - 《史学季刊》 (published in Chengdu in March 1940), and discussed these topics. Since the rise of silk weaving in Jiangnan, Shu brocade has gradually diminished and is not valued by the general populace. What was discussed in the previous article is also not detailed.
