This chapter, Waves of Inspiration: Learning about Exemplary Leadership, explores the power of images, stories, metaphors, and language in shaping and communicating the essence of leading for mission. The chapter begins by introducing the concept of leadership expressed as “at our best,” emphasising the importance of identifying and celebrating practices that exemplify excellence and authenticity. It then presents two images, underground trains and the Titanic story, as illustrations of leadership dynamics and key characteristics. Next, the chapter introduces two legends, Father Ben and Adam, as witnesses to the living spirit of leading for mission. It also explores two metaphors, ‘liquid gold’ and ‘a tree by the waterside’ as evocative representations of the nature and impact of leading for mission. Finally, the chapter examines the role of language, particularly expressions of thanks, appreciation, and gratitude, in reinforcing a culture of affirmation and blessing.
