This chapter, The Vocational Nature of Leadership, situates leadership within the context of missionary discipleship, emphasising the deeply personal and relational nature of the call to lead in Catholic schools. Drawing on the metaphor of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage, the chapter introduces the idea of leadership as a journey of encounter and transformation. It explores the concept of “stepping up and stepping out” as a way of responding to the invitation to share in Christ’s mission, even amidst the challenges and uncertainties of the current context. The chapter also emphasises the importance of “passing it on,” recognising that leadership is not about personal achievement but about empowering others and building a community of faith. It concludes by affirming that the goal of leadership is not success in a worldly sense but a deeper conformity to Christ, becoming “clothed in Christ” and reflecting His love and presence in the world.
