Lactic acid (LA) is an alpha hydroxy acid, naturally occurring in sour milk, yoghurt and tomato juice. It has a large molecular weight, making cutaneous penetration very slow, thereby resulting in less irritation. Apart from being less irritating, it has an added advantage of being a good hydrating agent and is therefore preferred for dry and sensitive skin.
