In last chapter, we mainly focused on V-DE Constraint on Object, that is, if the verb before DE requires an NP object semantically, the NP cannot appear after the verb (whether before or after DE). If they must appear (in some round-about ways), the only possible ways are to be a topic, focus or in a verb-copying construction, or in a fake possessives structure. In this chapter, we will demonstrate that another type of resultatives, namely, V-V compounds, also derive fake possessives. The derivation mechanism is similar, too. It is V-V Compound Constraint on Object.

摘要

In last chapter, we mainly focused on V-DE Constraint on Object, that is, if the verb before DE requires an NP object semantically, the NP cannot appear after the verb (whether before or after DE). If they must appear (in some round-about ways), the only possible ways are to be a topic, focus or in a verb-copying construction, or in a fake possessives structure. In this chapter, we will demonstrate that another type of resultatives, namely, V-V compounds, also derive fake possessives. The derivation mechanism is similar, too. It is V-V Compound Constraint on Object.
