Mental Health Consequences of Disasters and Their Management: Current Status in India
摘要
Disasters are common in India and affect a large number of people. The awareness about their impact on the mental health of the survivors has gone up in recent years. There are many epidemiological and interventional studies following major disasters. These suggest that a considerable proportion of survivors have anxiety, depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, and various other psychiatric illnesses. There have been some specific post-disaster mental health interventions, which do not appear to address the enormous need. The psychosocial support should be more robust and arranged in a structured way. Increasing availability and access to mental health support may be achieved through improving the skills of the existing workforce through appropriate training and more joined-up working of primary and secondary care services. There is a need for research in various areas of disaster mental health in India.
