In Zimbabwe, the care of orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) is a pressing concern, with traditional approaches facing challenges in the context of modernisation and globalisation. This desktop and discourse analysis study examines contemporary issues and trends in OVC care in Zimbabwe, with a focus on rethinking traditional approaches to meet the needs of vulnerable children better. The study analyses existing literature and policies on OVC care in Zimbabwe, examining the intersections of culture, community, and government interventions. The findings underscore the need for a more nuanced understanding of OVC care in Zimbabwe, one that takes into account the complex interplay between traditional and modern approaches. The study reveals that a mix of traditional community-based care and modern government-led interventions characterises contemporary OVC care in Zimbabwe. However, these approaches often operate in silos, with limited coordination and integration. The main finding of this study is that a rethinking of OVC care in Zimbabwe requires a more integrated and culturally sensitive approach, one that leverages the strengths of traditional community-based care while incorporating the benefits of modern government-led interventions. Based on this finding, the study recommends that policymakers and practitioners prioritise the development of integrated OVC care models that combine traditional and modern approaches, with a focus on community engagement, capacity-building, and cultural sensitivity.
