Artificially constructed canals required regular maintenance and dredging to prevent silting and ensure continued operation. However, the great turmoil at the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty deprived the Bian Canal of the opportunity for necessary upkeep. During this period, the imperial court moved erratically, from Luoyang to Chang’an, then back to Luoyang, and eventually to Xu County (present-day Xuchang in Henan).

Artificially constructed canals required regular maintenance and dredging to prevent silting and ensure continued operation. However, the great turmoil at the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty deprived the Bian Canal of the opportunity for necessary upkeep. During this period, the imperial court moved erratically, from Luoyang to Chang’an, then back to Luoyang, and eventually to Xu County (present-day Xuchang in Henan).
