Disabled children experience a higher risk of abuse and neglect than their majority population peers. This risk is compounded by multiple barriers to safeguarding them effectively. Disabled children who are non-verbal or have cognitive impairments, for instance, may struggle to let others know if they have been harmed, and even when they are able to disclose abuse, they may not be considered credible. Such barriers are complex and can be both practical and socio-cultural in nature. In this chapter, the focus will be on providing an overview of key issues and considerations regarding safeguarding and protection of disabled children. The chapter ends by offering pathways forward for social workers, who are concerned with making positive change happen, toward promoting the safety and welfare of disabled children.
