Music is a precious commodity for the affective making of youth identitiesYouth identities; a key axis of meaning in the constitution of a viable self. Although Indonesia is a secular democracy, Muslim religious influence is strong in public and private life. Although some ascetic Islamic figures in the country regard music as haram,many popular preachers incorporate catchy devotional music in their pious discourse, both offline and online. We argue that the broad category of musik IslamiMusik Islami—Muslim-oriented popular music—facilitates the identity of being young and Muslim in a context where Islam seems ever more politicised. Through engaging with religiously inflected music, Muslim youth can establish their pietyPiety while engaging with the vibrant realm of secularSecular popular music shared by age peers. There is no unitary form of Islam in Indonesia. Young Muslims might be neo-traditionalists, neo-reformists, neo-conservatives, so-called ‘ordinary’ Muslims (Islam biasa) or radical Islamists. To match that diversity, musik Islami is multi-faceted, including not only devotional genres such as nasyid, hadrah and sholawat, but hybrid genres such as Muslim hip-hop, Muslim punk and even Muslim heavy metal.
