The recent research approaches in sodium-ion batteries/hybrid capacitors have gained immense interest among scientists owing to specific facts such as an abundance of sodium, lower cost, and chemical properties mimicking those of lithium and suitable for large-scale energy storage applications where the footprint is not an issue. It is however pertinent to look into issues related to the choice of anode materials, suitable organic electrolytes, SEI instability, binders, and additives to enhance the energy and power densities of NIBs. All of these therefore, need rational optimization for imparting practical feasibility to sodium-ion batteries (NIBs), and hence significant developments are still desired. This perspective review aims to comprehensively summarize the progress and discuss the issues on anode materials, rational cell-design principles, ion-transport kinetics, storage mechanisms, interfacial studies, electrochemical performance, and their implications.

摘要
