This chapter will discuss the definition of digital materiality, the specificities of born-digital text, and the basic facts and common misunderstandings about the sinograph. Most importantly, it will introduce the concept of affordance by analyzing the affordances of sinographs in static (non-digital) language art. According to Don Norman, affordance refers to how an object could possibly be used. By examining works such as the erotic novel Ruined City by Jia Pingwa, which uses boxes to represent “censored” passages, and Xu Bing’s famous asemic woodblock-printed installation Book from the Sky, three affordances are summarized: “The Fixed Square”, “Pictographic”, and “Componential Recombination”. These affordances illustrate what sinographs can offer not only as a written language but also as a material for visual art. Following this, the chapter will explore works that bridge digital and non-digital texts to investigate why and how the digital environment may enhance these affordances.

摘要
