The Sinograph in Digital Language Art is an analysis of digital artworks that use Chinese characters (sinographs) as their main material. This includes works in Japanese and Chinese languages. This book aims to show how sinographs provide unique affordances for creating digital language art that differ from other writing systems. This introductory chapter will define two important concepts of this book: “digital text” and “digital language art”. Digital text refers to text that not only exists in digital form but is also born-digital. Such text cannot be produced, stored, or read without digital hardware, nor can it be adapted to non-digital media without major changes. Digital language art encompasses works built from digital text. These can be media artworks consisting mainly of written or verbal text, or literary works where visual or auditory elements play a significant role in meaning-making.
