Lightning is a transient high-voltage, high-current, long-distance flash discharge phenomenon that occurs in the atmosphere, most lightning discharges are generated in thunderstorms with characteristic extents of 5–10 km and, in extreme cases, can exceed 100 km. Lightning flashes usually originate from charge centers in cumulonimbus clouds, although they can occur under other atmospheric conditions.
