The Asian Diaspora in Poland
摘要
As Poland has been rapidly transforming from emigration to immigration country in recent decades, mmigration from Asia to Poland has also been radically changing in scale, form, and character. The first limited inflow of mainly Asian students to Poland took place during the Cold War. These early migrants were followed by asylum-seekers from Chechnya in the 1990s and more recently by economic migrants. The accession of Poland to the European Union in 2004 and the beginning of the war in Ukraine in 2014 were some of the key events that contributed to the Polish migration transition and the growing attractiveness of the country as a migration destination. The chapter traces the development of the Asian diaspora in Poland, characterising the main national and occupational groups of migrants and the various reasons for their mobility. It places the Asian community in the wider context of migration to Poland and the country’s migration transition.
