The music notation of Guqin (古琴), a traditional Chinese instrument with a history of over 3,000 years, are difficult to be understood by people today. In this study, the radicals of Jian-Zi-Pu ( ), the traditional Guqin music notation, are recognized by YOLOv8 and YOLO11. A dataset including 2,352 images of radicals was created at first, which had 20 classes for 26 single characters of Jian-Zi-Pu, collected from 6 kinds of versions of Guqin music “Chun Xiao Yin” ( ). Then the learning performances of YOLOv8 and YOLO11 were verified by the experiments. It was found that YOLO11 achieved 99.3% mAP50, meanwhile, YOLOv8’s accuracy was 99.2% for a 20-class recognition problem of radicals of Jian-Zi-Pu of Chun Xiao Yin.
