Stressful situations cause individuals to experience psychological need frustration, anxiety, fear, and ill-being. In this chapter, we describe a eudaimonic approach for coping with stressful situations or lifestyle changes in order to reduce stress and enhance vitality. The approach is based on self-determination theory, which maintains that eudaimonia is an approach to living that involves four important aspects include being aware of actions, putting importance on intrinsic life goals rather than extrinsic goals, satisfying the three basic psychological needs for competence, autonomy, and relatedness, and living in an autonomous way. The starting and important point is awareness, which involves how individuals can be mindful and live in the present, and accepting their emotions and affects even in challenging situations. We then review research and provide important principles on how to live in a eudaimonic way. Studies indicate that a eudaimonic way of living results in intrinsic motivation toward activities, greater persistence, connection to others, and enhanced performance and well-being, and lower ill-being and amotivation because it facilitates the satisfaction of psychological needs. Finally, we provide a framework on how societal and individuals levels would help ones to live eudaimonically using practical implications during stressful situations.

摘要
