This chapter explores how football was cultivated in the colonial period through the independent boys’ school system and the educational ideology known as ‘athleticism,’ a term coined by British historian J.A. Mangan. Mangan, a leading scholar on the cultural and political role of sport in British and colonial societies, examined how sport and physical training were promoted in elite British schools to instil character, discipline, and a sense of duty.
