Empirical phenomena each have their own modes and patterns of existence, and there are many different ways for people to grasp them—direct experience, logical deduction, insight, or “sudden awakening” (顿悟). Scientific research differs, however, by emphasizing a model of knowledge that can be repeatedly tested. The humanities and social sciences are no exception. If we fail to acknowledge or adhere to this point, we open ourselves up to the criticism of insufficient rigor. For public philosophical analysis, the maintenance of logical coherence will usually suffice, whereas social research requires more work. This is especially true for qualitative research, where it is crucial to grasp and present empirical findings. 摘要

The interdisciplinary field of rural studies belongs to this category, where one controversial incident emerged with British anthropologist Edmund Leach.
