In this chapter, we develop an integrative analytical framework to explore the discursive construction of legal reasoning in judicial opinions, grounded in the theoretical architecture of Systemic Functional Linguistics. Of particular relevance is the Sydney School’s genre theory (Martin and Rose 2008) and the DISCOURSE SEMANTICS system (Martin 1992; Martin and Rose 2003/2007). We also discuss how this analytical framework works to help address the three research questions.
