According to the Reggio Emilia approach, the learning environment is the third teacher that supports and inspires students’ learning. The design and organisation of space, availability of books and materials within the space, as well as the visuals within the space work together to encourage student-centred and independent reading. The use of the learning environment is also enhanced when time is set aside for reading, and talking about books is encouraged within the classroom. Drawing on ecological perspectives of learning, this chapter offers an overview of the research on learning environments. It provides suggestions on how to design classrooms and the school library to motivate engaged reading.
