Listening is often seen as a foundational skill through which first language learners develop other language abilities. In the early years of schooling, language teachers commonly adopt interactive methods involving listening to familiar stories, such as the shared book approach. However, in multilingual settings where learners may have limited exposure to rich, authentic English outside the classroom, listening instruction often receives less emphasis than it should. This chapter outlines two key approaches to teaching listening—intensive and extensive—and examines their respective contributions to overall language proficiency. While both are important, extensive listening deserves greater instructional focus, particularly in environments where learners have limited exposure to the target language. The chapter also offers practical examples of how extensive listening can be effectively integrated into classroom practice across such contexts.
