Evaluate Existing Logistic Solutions and Develop a Sustainable Packaging Solution for Live Hot Pepper Plantlets

Principal focus of the study was to evaluate the existing logistic solutions for live plantlets supply chain in terms of social, and environmental aspects and to develop customize, sustainable packaging solution. Mixed methods approach was instrumental in data collection and key methods were field observations, in-depth interviews with key informants and field survey assisted with pre-tested structured questionnaire. Sample comprised of 50 nursery owners and 50 farmers selected purposively. Informal discussions were conducted with agronomists and the experts of the packaging industry. Courier services were handling 76% of the live plantlet distribution. Unavailability of customizable and flexible packaging solutions failed to protect live plantlets and negatively effect on plantlet sales. Quality packaging materials and plantlets of hybrid seeds were preferred most, while high cost of delivery services and poor packaging solutions were badly affected on smooth supply chain operations. Of the sample 32% farmers were reuse the packaging material for farm purpose such as storing seed, equipment, harvest, 52% dispose (10% burning) without any use, 4% of farmers sold to recycle shops, and 2% return to suppliers for discounts on repurchases. Recycling and composting cardboard reduce resource waste, conserve energy, and improve sustainability, while repurposing supports eco-friendly farming. Improper disposal badly affected on environment. Effective reuse, recycling, and composting systems, alongside supplier return programs, can mitigate environmental damage and address packaging-related challenges. The designed packaging solution measures 54 × 30 × 60 cm and features a double-layered box with a handle. It is made from C-flute corrugated board, which is lightweight, durable, and provides a cushioning effect, and is covered with polylactic acid material.
