This chapter reviews the fundamental properties of ytterbium atoms and Rydberg states. The first part summarizes the Yb energy levels and transitions utilized in this study. The second part discusses the physical characteristics of Rydberg states, the multi-channel quantum defect theory, the unique properties of two-electron Rydberg atoms, and the interactions between Rydberg atoms.
