Exploring the Neuroprotective Potential of Extra Virgin Olive Oil: A Dietary Approach to Mitigating Alzheimer’s Disease
摘要
A promising dietary intervention for supporting brain function and maybe slowing the course of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is extra virgin olive oil (EVOO). Packed with monounsaturated fatty acids, especially oleic acid, EVOO supports neuronal function and communication by preserving the integrity of brain cell membranes. In addition to its beneficial fat content, EVOO has potent polyphenolic chemicals with high anti-inflammatory and antioxidant qualities, including oleeuropein, hydroxytyrosol, and oleocanthal. By neutralizing reactive oxygen species and reducing inflammatory responses in the brain, these bioactives fight oxidative stress and chronic neuroinflammation, two major factors that contribute to AD pathogenesis. According to research, EVOO helps the brain’s glymphatic system remove amyloid-beta, which may decrease the buildup of plaque, a defining characteristic of AD. It also seems to control the phosphorylation of tau proteins, which lessens the development of neurofibrillary tangles that disrupt brain transmission and synaptic function. Additionally, EVOO promotes neurogenesis and cognitive resilience by increasing brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels and synaptic plasticity. Existing research shows that adding high-quality EVOO to a balanced diet, especially the Mediterranean dietary pattern, offers a useful, natural strategy for long-term brain health, even if extensive human trials are still being conducted. When combined with other healthy lifestyle choices like exercise and mental stimulation, EVOO might be a convenient and successful dietary approach to lower the risk of AD and promote cognitive function. This study provides insights into how dietary choices might affect brain health by highlighting EVOO’s distinct nutritional profile, neuroprotective processes, and possible involvement in preventing and delaying the course of AD. Knowing how the bioactive ingredients in EVOO work together may lead to novel dietary treatments for neurodegenerative illnesses, making EVOO an essential part of brain-healthy eating plans.
