Selection of Appropriate Technologies
摘要
The debate was on the notion of industrialisation in India, which Gandhi felt came at the price of losing ancient rural traditions. Furthermore, Gandhi opined that in a country with a teeming population, it is necessary that the machinery does not displace labour and thus resulting in the loss of employment. The importance of contextual design was further highlighted when the scientific community realised that most of the technology transferred to the developing nations was lying unused. This triggered the Appropriate Technology movement around the 1970s, where the designers looked for alternative approaches by trying to use local resources and appropriate materials while designing new technologies.
