Rites and War: The Debate Over Tribute Policy at the Court, 1517–1519

This chapter deals with factional politics in Beijing, 1517–1519. It examines the struggle between the Minister of Rites Mao Cheng and the Minister of War Wang Qiong over how to deal with the aggressive Sultanate of Turfan. Against this background, the two ministries also concurrently made decisions about the Portuguese embassy.
