Osteoporosis is both a qualitative and quantitative defect of bone, i.e., an equivalent loss of matrix and minerals, that usually affects all the bones of the body. It results in increased bone fragility, and hence susceptibility to fracture. Osteoporosis is by far the commonest metabolic bone disease. It is a silent disease and usually presents only after a fracture, which causes important secondary health problems and sometimes even death.
