Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is a disorder of adolescents in which the proximal femoral epiphysis is displaced inferiorly and posteriorly. The physis is weakened due to an underlying pathology and is predisposed to a slip. The term SCFE is a misnomer because the epiphysis remains within its position in the acetabulum, while the metaphysis moves upward and anteriorly. The slip commonly occurs through the zone of maturing hypertrophied cartilage in the physis.
