Trauma is the most common cause of spinal injuries. This can be devastating, often resulting in severe morbidity and can lead to permanent disability. Injuries of the spine can be divided into five distinct anatomic regions, like cervical, cervicothoracic, thoracic, thoracolumbar, and low lumbar segments. Most of the injuries occur in the thoracolumbar area, followed by the lower cervical region. The clinical outcomes of spinal cord injuries (SCIs) depend on the severity and location of the injury. They may include partial or complete loss of sensory and/or motor function below the level of injury. The neurological deficit can be paraplegia in thoracolumbar injuries or quadriplegia in cervical spine injuries. It has devastating consequences for patients’ physical, emotional, social, and vocational well-being.
