Sustainable Construction Practices

This chapter explores the integration of blockchain technology into sustainable construction practices, highlighting its transformative potential in addressing environmental, economic, and social challenges within the built environment. Sustainable construction is increasingly recognised as a critical pathway toward reducing the carbon footprint of infrastructure, promoting resource efficiency, and enhancing lifecycle performance. At the same time, blockchain technology is gaining attention for its ability to provide secure, transparent, and tamper-proof data management systems, which are essential for improving accountability and traceability across construction projects. The chapter provides a comprehensive overview of sustainable construction, existing frameworks and standards, and the various applications of blockchain that support sustainability objectives which include material traceability, carbon emissions tracking, circular economy practices, and smart contract-based compliance. Drawing on real-world case studies, the chapter illustrates how blockchain is being implemented in modular construction, green building certification, community-led housing, and waste management systems, demonstrating its growing relevance in diverse contexts. It also discusses the challenges and barriers to adoption, including issues of interoperability, digital literacy, cost, and regulatory readiness. Further, it highlights the broader implications of blockchain for the construction industry, public policy, and the pursuit of global sustainability goals such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Future directions and emerging trends are examined as critical pathways for advancing smart, resilient, and environmentally responsible construction systems. The chapter concludes that blockchain is not a standalone solution but a strategic enabler capable of fostering a culture of transparency, innovation, and sustainability in the built environment, provided that systemic barriers are addressed and cross-sector collaboration is strengthened.
