In this article, a square shaped microstrip patch antenna (MPA) for dual band operation is presented. One rectangular slot and three notches are used to design the presented antenna. The three notches are inserted at the upper edge of the patch while one rectangular slot is inserted on the patch near feed line. The proposed antenna is operating from frequency ranges 2.47 to 2.84 GHz in first band while 3.80 to 4.22 GHz in second band. The first band is operating at 2.67 GHz having bandwidth of 270 MHz while second band is operating at 4.02 GHz having bandwidth of 420 MHz. The proposed antenna shows return losses of − 23.02 dB and − 34.57 dB at 2.67 GHz and 4.02 GHz. Moreover, the presented antenna exhibits peak gain of 3.80 dB and 5.54 dB and efficiency of 78% and 79% at resonating frequencies. The operating band of presented antenna is appropriate for wireless applications in S and C-bands.
