Raspberry Pi Based Efficient Drowsiness Detection and Alerting System

This paper presents the development and implementation of a Raspberry Pi-based efficient drowsiness detection and alerting system. Drowsiness while driving poses a significant risk to road safety, leading to accidents and fatalities. Leveraging the capabilities of Raspberry Pi, the proposed system integrates a camera module to continuously monitor the driver’s facial expressions and eye movements in real-time. Through computer vision algorithms, drowsiness indicators are detected with high accuracy. Upon detection of drowsiness, the system triggers timely alerts, such as auditory warnings or seat vibrations, to prompt the driver to take necessary action. The compactness, affordability, and computational power of Raspberry Pi make it an ideal platform for deploying such safety–critical systems in vehicles. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed system in detecting drowsiness and alerting the driver, thereby enhancing road safety.
