Preliminary Exploration of the Methodology for “Zhuanyi Taiwanese Literature” from the Perspectives of Researchers, Writers, and Educators

The practice previously known as “promotion of literature” in Taiwan has unfolded a new chapter as it was renamed zhuanyi 轉譯 (transformation and translation) in recent years. Over the past decade (roughly from 2015 to the present), a group of young writers born in the 1980s who have received training in Taiwanese literature and history have practised zhuanyi, and several noteworthy phenomena have occurred within them. Firstly, they redefined their approaches to target audience and writing. From the very beginning, they consciously create their works according to the readerships and media forms of the final work they envision. They, too, reconfigure their approach to writing and practice new forms of cultural and historical creative writing and zhuanyi. Secondly, they advance narrative and fieldwork techniques simultaneously. Most of these authors are both creative practitioners and researchers. They not only have a superb command of literary skills but also the capacity to use the knowledge, methodology, and database in “Taiwan Studies” as the foundation for their fieldwork to expand issue awareness and discover new writing materials. This paper surveys the recent zhuanyi trend in the Taiwanese literary world through the lens of researcher, writer, and educator. It discusses the use of historical documents and “literary artefacts” in creative writing, showcases the results in course design and teaching, and attempts to systematise the methodology of “zhuanyi Taiwanese literature”.
