The digital teaching landscape has changed quite significantly over the past couple of years, with the impact of COVID-19 accelerating the adoption of new systems and services across the higher education sector (Marginson, 2020). This has only served to intensify the sector-wide focus on digital provision, drawing greater attention to the ways that online delivery can support different modalities of learning, teaching and assessment, with consequences for pedagogic design and engagement patterns between staff and students. It has challenged us to think about how we offer alternative and equitable learning, teaching and assessment opportunities for flexible learners and those remotely located from the university campus through online delivery (Office for Students, 2021; Rapanta et al., 2020; Universities UK, 2021). In this chapter we will discuss the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on technology adoption and online teaching methods within the UK higher education sector and how this might shape future learning and teaching developments. We will then go on to consider how institutional digital services may evolve in the future to support the full spectrum of student needs, reflecting on the practical challenges bound up with the development of the university of the future. This touches on infrastructure, system integration and organisational requirements, as well as pedagogical design and its role in helping us to draw on the affordances of new and emerging digital technologies.
