A Perspective from the Science Newsroom
摘要
Many of you may recognize the words “apron” and “pluripotent cell,” but this is a post by Haruko Obokata about “STAP cells,” which was a hot topic in Japan at the time. It was right after the announcement by RIKEN, when the allegations of research misconduct had not yet surfaced, and the media coverage was unquestionably positive. However, the tweet concerned not the STAP cells themselves but how the Japanese media covered the topic. “I thought it was a good article, but it was written by a foreign journalist. Japanese reporters only wrote uninspiring articles that had nothing to do with the discovery itself, such as the fact that Obokata was wearing an apron or that she was a woman,” he lamented, which can be interpreted as an indirect criticism of Japanese media delivered by praising foreign reporting.
