Learning photography with digital cameras can be challenging and may take hours of exploration of the camera settings. Instructors often guide students verbally and encourage students to take many shots, evaluate, and scroll the control wheel across the range of settings until the photo looks acceptable. Verbal guidance takes time, can be confusing, and might not be appropriate in a public setting. HaptiCam provides tactile guidance in real-time through skin drag using two tactors embedded in an augmented sleeve. The student receives guidance by comparing the perceived position of the tactor mapped to their camera in relation to the tactor mapped to the instructor’s camera–and adjusting their settings to match. We explored communication using voice and tactile cues with instructors, experts, and novices with initial impressions suggesting that two-tactor skin drag displays could be a viable strategy for communication when voice communication is not possible.
