This chapter explores the origins of Daoist thought using the method of “material culture” research developed in cultural anthropology in the 1990s. It aims to bridge the long-standing gap between the concepts of Dao and Qi, highlighting the potential informational value of new materials provided by archaeology and artifact collection. The study offers a contextualized interpretation of key Daoist concepts, revealing the sacred implications of prehistoric circular jade ritual objects and the animal prototypes in dragon mythology, and their connection to prehistoric Northern Goddess religions. The interdisciplinary approach of knowledge archaeology is employed to gain a comprehensive understanding, both metaphysical and tangible. This methodological attempt, further enhanced by phenomenological methodology, advocates a rational intuition that returns to the “facts” and “objects” themselves, avoiding excessive abstraction.
