News, Consumers and Citizens
摘要
The challenges facing the news media industry in the digital age include a crisis in traditional advertiser financed traditional business models, declining newsroom employment, and falling levels of public trust. This chapter examines the normative roles that journalism plays in supporting liberal democratic citizenship, and their relationship to alternative digital information sources. It explores the historical relationship between journalism and citizenship, the dual nature of news as both a private commodity and a public good, and the transformative impact of digital platforms on news distribution and consumption. Although critiques of media bias and commercialism persist, the chapter argues for continued public support for journalism as essential to sustaining informed citizenship and democratic debate. It concludes by addressing the complexities of platform dependence, media fragmentation, and policy interventions necessary to bolster journalism's public value in a polarised and digitalised information environment.
