The rapid digitisation of news media and the advent of artificial intelligence (AI) have fundamentally transformed the global media landscape, impacting business models and news production practices. As digital technologies and AI continue to reshape the global media landscape, countries in the Global South face unique obstacles and possess distinctive advantages in adapting to these changes. This chapter investigates how news organisations in the Global South are responding to these technological shifts, focusing on the sustainability of their business models and the quality of news production, while seeking to digitising and adopting emerging technologies. Through case studies from Africa, Asia, and Latin America, this chapter will examine the multifaceted responses of Global South newsrooms to the challenges and opportunities presented by digitisation and AI in the context of news media’s business models and sustainability. It will also explore the innovative strategies and implications of AI integration in journalism, particularly concerning economic viability, editorial independence, the democratisation of information, the digital colonialism, and the AI divide. Lastly, this chapter will uncover the role of government policies, collaborations, and local initiatives in fostering digital innovation and supporting the transition to AI-driven news ecosystems. By highlighting these examples, this research seeks to contribute to the broader discourse on media sustainability in the context of global technological changes. The discussions of this chapter aim to inform policymakers, media organisations, and researchers about the diverse approaches to achieving sustainable and equitable digital transformation in news production across different cultural, economic, and political contexts.
