This chapter explores how new search functions and answer engines powered by generative artificial intelligence (AI) affect news gathering, production and distribution at this pivotal time. Furthermore, it examines what value generative AI tools and services offer news organisations as they adjust their operations and workflows to respond to the new technological environment. The chapter also evaluates the monetary value of AI and investigates evolving copyright and content licensing agreements between AI providers and news media. The chapter argues that the emergence of these new providers will further fragment the media market and increase competition between AI companies, and between them and media companies, potentially contributing to the attention deficit as users move from one service to another. The chapter maintains that new generative AI tools and services are not revolutionising the revenue models of news publishers, but they do help them to retool for the near-term future.
