Collective Flourishing Amongst the Migrant Diaspora in a Country of Settlement
摘要
International migration is on the increase worldwide. The United Nations (2024), Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), estimates that 304 million people live outside their country of birth. In Australia, the number of people born in India has reached 721,000 (ABS, 2019–20, https://www.abs.gov.au/statistics/people/population/migration-australia/latest-release ). An initial settlement phase in a new country is not less than challenges. New immigrants are constantly juggling to belong to a new society, culture, and governance. Their health and well-being are determined by finding a house, job, driver’s license, Indian food, education and accessibility to health and welfare support systems. Despite numerous challenges, they not only cope but thrive and flourish in a new society. This chapter focuses on structures, processes, and ethos of collectivism, empowering and enabling the Indian diaspora to thrive in a new society. This is achieved by exploring various socio-cultural and political structures, processes of strengthening coping, building hope and resilience and values underpinning the collective flourishing amongst the Indian diasporas.
