During my fieldwork, I met Shekh Madhusudan in January 2019 on a peaceful winter afternoon in his ancestral home, two hours away from the bustling city of Kolkata. Shekh Madhusudan (born with the name Shekh Noor Mohammad) played bibek, the anthropomorphized conscience character in jatra, for most of his career. Shekh Madhusudan, an octogenarian with a lifetime imprinted into the lines on his weathered face, is a living testament to the passage of time and the wealth of experiences that accompany it.
