The Babakan Siliwangi Urban Forest, Its Eco-cultural Significance, and Environmental Activism in Its Defense
摘要
The Babakan Siliwangi urban forest is rich in biodiversity, home to a variety of native plant species and wildlife, and serves as an arena where community members showcase their cultural uniqueness through traditional practices and events. Although the Bandung city government oversees the position of this urban forest administratively, youth, children, and local communities are at the forefront of the forest’s protection and preservation movements, as they benefit from it on a daily basis. To illustrate its socio-ecological significance, the first section of this chapter outlines Bandung’s current pressing urban growth, which politically requires the government to create new commercial zones. The second part delves into the role of the Babakan Siliwangi forest, a physical space that young people, ethnic communities, and local communities use and maintain as a platform for exercising their cultural identity, conducting environmental education, and fostering a sense of communal citizenship. The last part investigates urban decentralization and its impact on the rising capitalization plan of this urban forest. As exploitation threatens the forest, along with policies that undermine both ecological balance and local communities, diverse social movements have emerged, uniting multiple groups in a collective effort to defend it. An overview of the social movement to defend the urban forest is chronicled in the final section.
