Double Reduction and After-School Services

The “Double Reduction” policy, formally known as the Opinions on Further Reducing the Homework Burden and Off-Campus Training Burden for Students in Compulsory Education, aims to alleviate excessive academic pressure on primary and secondary school students by reducing homework and off-campus tutoring, promoting well-rounded development, and reinforcing schools’ central role in education (Chen et al., 2023; Fu et al., 2023). The policy explicitly calls for improving the quality of after-school services to meet diverse student needs, leveraging high-quality digital platforms to provide learning support (Gong et al., 2025).
