Study on Extraction Methods and Antibacterial Properties of Mangosteen Peel for Cotton Fabric Printing
摘要
Mangosteen peel is a waste material after consumption. These wastes consist of bioactive compounds that has a potential used in antibacterial application and textile coloration. In this study investigates the use of mangosteen peel extract as a natural antibacterial agent for cotton fabric via different extraction technique and conditions were compared: The results found that the soxhlet extraction using either acetone or ethanol with 12 reflux cycles provided the most effective antibacterial properties, achieving 25 μL/mL of both MIC and MBC. The dried extract showed bacterial reduction up to 99.99%. A longer extraction time is required for ethanol, acetone was considered an selected solvent. When applied on cotton fabric using screen-printing, the mangosteen peel extract could retained antibacterial activity at 95.56% reduction. However, the fabric revealed the significant lighter color after washing. Therefore, the further studies to improve dye fixation are needed.
